I think this idea is perhaps best reflected by the blue sky analogy, where no matter how cloudy the sky becomes, there is always blue sky on the other side – in the same way that no matter how busy the mind appears, there is always an underlying sense of stillness if we can just stop for long enough for it to appear. I was thinking about nothing but my destination when I came upon Stonehenge at sunset, the stones glistening in the low, pink light. At that moment, traffic slowed to a crawl, enabling me to get a long look. This is free, I thought. A wondrous thing to marvel at, and I haven’t driven an inch out of my way. After 10 minutes, the traffic cleared and I was off again, feeling strangely moved. And then I forgot all about it.

These offer more-or-less prepackaged solutions to instruct people seeking their own individual betterment, just as “the literature of self-improvement directs the reader to familiar frameworks…what the French fin de siècle social theorist Gabriel Tarde called ‘the grooves of borrowed thought’.”
Boys tend to show the first physical changes of puberty between the ages of 10 and 16. They tend to grow most quickly between ages 12 and 15. The growth spurt of boys is, on average, about 2 years later than that of girls. By age 16, most boys have stopped growing, but their muscles will continue to develop.
I am ineluctably drawn to the quick fix. Could it be possible to cram a year’s self-improvement into a few minutes of effort a day, to get the whole business out of the way before the end of January? It can’t do any harm to try, can it?
So how can you get started on your own journey of personal growth. Or if you have already started to consciously follow personal development, how can you get to the next level? During my now over 10 years work on that topic, I identified several of those milestones mentioned above.
Ask for feedback. As much as we try to improve, we will always have blind spots. Asking for feedback gives us an additional perspective. Some people to approach will be friends, family, colleagues, boss, or even acquaintances, since they will have no preset bias and can give their feedback objectively.

There is the basic motivation to improve yourself. It’s either coming from inspiration and you are looking to get better than you already are, or it comes out of desperation: something unpleasant challenges you to grow. For instance, what brought you here today?
Many of your actions may already be geared toward “self-improvement”. This self-improvement, however, is mostly unconscious and for the majority of people it’s a case of pursuing “things” and “stuff” with the all-too-common assumption that when we get enough stuff, we will we be happy. You don’t have to search too far to find how wrong this theory is.
Unfortunately, there is no way of putting inches on your frame instantly. Growing taller is mostly about genetics. Between 60% and 80% of your height is determined by the DNA that your parents passed down to you, whereas about 20% to 40% of your growth is influenced by your environment. This means your diet, your health, how much you exercise, and how much sleep you get. Until your growth plates (the areas where your bones grow) close, you will keep growing. A good diet, healthy exercise, and lots of sleep can help you get taller in this period than you would otherwise. For most people, however, growth plates close in their early twenties, and after that, they are not going to gain any inches naturally. Women typically stop growing around age 18 while men may stop around age 20.
