Two of the biggest problems of operating a retail store are the overhead of having a storefront and the risk and cost of carrying inventory. With a virtual consignment store you eliminate both of these problems! You could take it one step further and have your suppliers drop ship the goods for you.
This is not my favorite business on this list but I feel compelled to list it because it is so popular. So why is it not my favorite? It tends be very competitive, hard work and relatively low profits. So, if you do go into this business I would do everything possible to differentiate your business and to be able to charge premium pricing.
There’s a lot of money out there in grants, but writing grant proposals can take a lot of time, especially if you are not experienced at it. Like so many other fields, specialization will help get business, and it will allow you to charge much higher fees. And, as you build a track record of successfully securing grants, you will also be able to charge more.

This is one of the top businesses that will never get old. There are a lot of ways you can market a t-shirt business. Designs are endless and there are a lot of ways to customize it. You can make Couple Shirts, Company shirts, Campaign shirts, and all kinds of shirts! Just make sure you got good designs and your base t-shirt is of good quality, you can make a living out of this business.
Wouldn’t you enjoy making kids smile and laugh? What a great way to earn some good money, especially at kids’ birthdays and Bar and Bat mitzvahs! Business will be heavily focused on weekends, so you can hold onto your day job as you build your clientele. I met a professional clown who told me that he charged $200 an hour…for that price I’ll put the clown suit on right now!
All those phone calls you get from non-profits looking for donations…the majority of those calls aren’t from the non-profits themselves, they are from fund-raising firms. Yes, you could put together a phone solicitation service for non-profits, but fundraising is increasingly turning to inbound marketing. You could develop strategic inbound marketing plans and/or execute these plans for your customers.
I have seen experienced, full-time builders get fleeced by contractors who either run out of money or take some payments in advance and disappear. This situation can be particularly messy and costly if a contractor that you have paid never gave money to the subcontractors, leaving you to pay for the same work twice!
But if you like shopping, there are plenty of people (typically busy business executives and the like) who want to hire you to do their shopping for them! With this business, I’d particularly emphasize the personal touch when seeking customers. Reach out to all possible contacts and don’t be shy to push them to pass the word on to everyone they know. This business is an obvious candidate for social media promotion. I would also consider starting a fun blog on what cool styles you are noticing in the stores today!
Hi Byrant, since you already have equipment your biggest initial expense will be insurance. What is required varies by state + county, but I wouldn’t go with less than $500,000, but 1M is better. If you don’t do tree work or irrigation be sure to let your insurance agent know that as it raises the cost.
We all have something that we are good at, so why not try to sell your services in the form of a private lesson: a very low risk start-up. You might find teaching the lesson to be the easiest part. Along the way you’ll gain valuable marketing and sales experience in your search for clients and practice skills like negotiation and client management.
You could sell or repair drones, or you could provide one of an unlimited number of drone services. You could provide drone photography or video-taping such as of sporting events, you could offer drones for parties, you could offer drones to inspect infrastructure. There is almost no limit to what you can do with drones!
So, you start out with some stunning jewelry designs but how do you turn it into a business? One of my friends’ sisters turned her jewelry hobby into a full-time job by selling her products to a few local jewelry stores. Another woman I know built her business into a much larger enterprise…all built around a strong unifying theme. That’s the key here, success will come a lot easier if you build a distinctive overall brand, and ideally have closely matched collections within the brand.

I believe more parts of our homes will be smart in the coming years. If you’re a corporate electronics or electrical engineer, you may want to try bringing your automation skills in a business. This is actually a good business to start because most of the cost are shouldered by your clients.
Obtain an required business licenses. License requirements will vary according to your state, or even according to the county where you plan to do business. Contact your county clerk’s office to determine if any licenses or permits are required for your type of business.
A lot of people don’t want to leave their bowser at the busy kennel along with all the other dogs. They are willing to pay a premium and even drive a distance to a place where they believe their dog will be pampered.
Many people simply don’t enjoy cleaning their homes and are willing to pay a reasonable price to have someone do the work for them. This is a great way to earn extra money in a flexible way, particularly if you have time off during the workweek. And since you will be working for yourself, you can often choose your own hours, terms, and pay.
Some firms outsource their customer service operations and many of these companies accept home-based contractors. You can start by signing up on freelancing sites such as Upwork to test the waters with this business idea first. If you’re already a CSR specialist with management skills, then you can form and lead a virtual team online and engage clients as a bona fide customer service company or, provide customer service training to such teams as well as individuals.
The California Small Business Development Center is a great resource if you need a little assistance coming up with funding opportunities. They’ve got dozens of locations across the state where you can go to discuss potential funding approaches for your business based on all the criteria above (and more).
This is another highly valued skill in the internet marketing world. That being said, it can be a bit difficult because Google is always changing its algorithms. With it, some of the rules of search change. You always have to be on the leading edge, learning and testing new strategies.
Let’s pretend that I am the Amazon algorithm, and it’s my job to choose what we show people who are using the site. Imagine someone searches for a teapot. How do I choose from the hundreds of teapots which ones to show the user?
You could initially break into the carpet installation business by marketing directly to consumers. However, the bigger money comes from contracting out your services to carpet retailers. Still, I’d probably try to start out doing a few jobs independently to build references and experience before approaching some small retailers for contract work.
If you can save up as much of the start-up capital yourself before you open your doors, you will help ensure that loans won’t sink your new business. Remember, also, that there’s an outside chance that a lender will call a loan or add unfavorable terms if your business isn’t as successful as you initially planned. If you provide as much of the start-up money as possible, it will lessen the odds of a nasty surprise like this hindering your business.
To get going in this business, I might offer a couple, very basic “starter packages,” where for one price you get a client up and running. I’d tend to keep the price low, “over deliver,” and make the client happy – then try to build a long term relationship, offering a fixed package of services for an annual subscription or monthly price.
Many business and non-profit associations are too small to hire a full-time administrator but still have a lot of administrative work to be done. Some of the business groups I belong to, such as local chapter of The Young President’s Organization and The Harvard Business School Association of Boston, have hired an association management service which is typically a single individual or in one case a mother/daughter team. For these businesses, the management service processes membership dues and event payments, fields questions about events, arranges logistics for events, and attends events and welcomes members. Payment is usually on a monthly retainer basis.
Companies and non-profits spend a lot of money on meetings, and even when they have in-house staff they will often hire a meeting planner service. They are particularly likely to hire a meeting planner when they are planning a meeting in a distant city. To get going in this business take advantage of any contacts you have, approach local associations and businesses, and build up a strong online-presence.
Have you cracked the code for landing higher paying jobs at the drop of a hat? If you have a knack for helping your friends or co-workers navigate the process of finding their dream job, nailing an interview, negotiating a better salary or getting a raise at their current day job, other people would be willing to pay for your help too—making this a great side business idea that doesn’t take too much time. Get started by sharing your advice on a personal blog and becoming a career coach on platforms like The Muse and Coach Me where there’s already an existing audience of people looking to make a move in their careers. From there, keep your focus on helping people get real results, building case studies to support this side business idea, and eventually charging for the results you’re delivering clients.
Especially if you are not sure of what type of business you want to start, I would recommend starting a service business. Service businesses tend to be local, and competition from national firms tends to be less severe than for product or Internet firms. For example, national firms usually don’t have a significant cost advantage. And the personal touch of a local owner can be a significant advantage in a local service business.
To become a financial advisor, you need to submit an application to a recruiting manager. You will take exam, interview, and training. Once you passed the Insurance Commission’s licensing exam, you need to meet your branch’s minimum requirements to become officially part of the Financial Advisory profession.
