Hobbies serve a multitude of purposes. You learn a new skill, it’s (usually) a creative or physical outlet, it often introduces you to new people, it gets you out of that comfy place, it’s usually an achievement of something you’ve always wanted to do or try, and it gives you something interesting to talk about when you meet new people. Being passionate about something different is cool. Passionate people are interesting, and it doesn’t even matter what the passion is. It’s energizing to talk to someone who has a real excited love for something.
Research has been conducted on goal setting in an effort to determine whether people are more likely to perform well when working on challenging goals or easier deliverables. The research revealed that when goals are stretching, they result in significantly higher performance. This should be kept in mind when agreeing personal development objectives, but remember to keep things in perspective. Objectives that stretch an individual beyond the limit of their capabilities will not be achieved and you will be left with an employee feeling disillusioned and unmotivated.

Relationships are a double-edged sword. They either lift you up or drag you down. When you improve your personal development, you are better able to see which relationships are worth investing in and which need to be cut loose. You also develop the skills to make the most of those relationships which have the most positive impact on your life.

As adults, they will move through the world assuming all human relationships are a never-ending tit-for-tat trade agreement. That intimacy is no more than a feigned sense of knowing one another for each person’s mutual benefit. Again, this is because, in the transactional world of high schools, this person was mistreated and abused for doing those transactions poorly. They didn’t dress the right way. They weren’t a “cool” kid. They got bad grades or had a learning disability or were scrawny and awkward. As a result, they are psychologically punished for decades, as they live the rest of their life in constant fear of ever fucking up a transactional relationship ever again. And instead of recognizing that the problem is the transactional approach to the world itself, they assume the problem is that it took them so long to do the transactions appropriately.
The same principles can be applied whatever goal or problem the client has. GROW can be used on technical problems, issues regarding processes, strategy questions, interpersonal issues and many more. The model can also be used by a group who are all working on the same problem or goal.
Increased personal growth and development is the goal of a wide range of men and women.  It includes those who suffer from problems in their relationship with others, or who suffer emotionally with feeling of low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression.  It also includes individuals who are marginally successful or even very successful in life, but who want to improve their efficiency, their ability to be and feel intimate  and relate to others, , and/or their general level of satisfaction with, and enjoyment of, living.
Billionaire Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, believes happiness is not about doing; it’s about being. He advises people to write a “to be” list instead of a “to do” one. Here’s Branson expressing this idea in his “Dear Stranger” letter written a few years ago:

In practice, professional development for educators encompasses an extremely broad range of topics and formats. For example, professional-development experiences may be funded by district, school, or state budgets and programs, or they may be supported by a foundation grant or other private funding source. They may range from a one-day conference to a two-week workshop to a multiyear advanced-degree program. They may be delivered in person or online, during the school day or outside of normal school hours, and through one-on-one interactions or in group situations. And they may be led and facilitated by educators within a school or provided by outside consultants or organizations hired by a school or district. And, of course, the list of possible formats could go on.
The magic happens when we stop…when we stop reading, when we stop searching, when we stop trying to be a better, nicer, happier, calmer person and just allow the mind to express itself exactly as it is. Because underneath all the crazy thoughts and challenging feelings is that blue sky. And if we can set up a framework where that can be revealed safely, and with restraint, then thoughts and feelings can once again flow as they were meant to.
The parallel between Gallwey’s Inner Game method and the GROW method can be illustrated by the example of players who do not keep their eyes on the ball. Some coaches might give instructions such as: “Keep your eye on the ball” to try to correct this. The problem with this sort of instruction is that a player will be able to follow it for a short while but may be unable to keep it in mind in the long term. So one day, instead of giving an instruction, Gallwey asked players to say “bounce” out loud when the ball bounced and “hit” out loud when they hit the ball.
A personal development plan is a process that consists of defining what is important to you, what you want to achieve, what strengths you already have that help to achieve your goals, and what you need to improve and develop with time.
While delivering the hard truth about the cause behind our current environmental state, the symposium also inspires a profound bond with fellow humans and defines what it means to be a global citizen. How will you find time to learn those news skills you wrote about above? Easy, stop wasting time. I bet you could easily carve out a few hours in your day to learn a new skill. It’s all about shifting things around. Most notably, stop watching so much TV! Studies show that too much TV watching is harmful to our health.

The desire to achieve and to demonstrate perfection is not simply stressful; it can also be fatal, according to the British journalist Will Storr. His forthcoming book, “Selfie: How We Became So Self-Obsessed and What It’s Doing to Us” (Overlook), opens, alarmingly, with a chapter on suicide. Storr is disturbed by the prevalence of suicide in the United States and Britain, and blames the horror and shame of failing to meet the sky-high expectations we set for ourselves. He cites surveys that show that adolescent girls are increasingly unhappy with their bodies, and that a growing number of men are suffering from muscle dysmorphia; he interviews psychologists and professors who describe an epidemic of crippling anxiety among university students yoked to the phenomenon of “perfectionist presentation”—the tendency, especially on social media, to make life look like a string of enviable triumphs. Storr confesses that he, too, is dogged by self-loathing and suicidal thoughts. “We’re living in an age of perfectionism, and perfection is the idea that kills,” he writes. “People are suffering and dying under the torture of the fantasy self they’re failing to become.”

Overcome your fears. All of us have fears. Fear of uncertainty, fear of public speaking, fear of risk… All our fears  keep us in the same position and prevent us from growing. Recognize that your fears reflect areas where you can grow. I always think of fears as the compass for growth. If I have a fear about something, it represents something I’ve yet to address, and addressing it helps me to grow.
One of the biggest obstacles to motivation is the overwhelming size of the goal. There just seems to be so much to do that you feel like you can never achieve it all. And if you don’t feel like you can achieve it, how can you get motivated to get it done? The answer is that you really need to understand the truth about goals. The end goal/dream is just the culmination of a process so, you don’t need to motivate yourself for that. You only need enough motivation to take the next action.
Unfortunately, there is no way of putting inches on your frame instantly. Growing taller is mostly about genetics. Between 60% and 80% of your height is determined by the DNA that your parents passed down to you, whereas about 20% to 40% of your growth is influenced by your environment. This means your diet, your health, how much you exercise, and how much sleep you get. Until your growth plates (the areas where your bones grow) close, you will keep growing. A good diet, healthy exercise, and lots of sleep can help you get taller in this period than you would otherwise.[1] For most people, however, growth plates close in their early twenties, and after that, they are not going to gain any inches naturally. Women typically stop growing around age 18 while men may stop around age 20.[2]

What is personal growth and development? It’s a concept that basically means you’re actively growing and improving in all areas of your development. You’re actively trying to become a better person on all levels to make your life and relationships more productive, fulfilling and meaningful. Think of it as your quest to become more mature, successful and happy.
The old saying, you are the company that you keep, is true. If you are always hanging around with unmotivated people, you too will be unmotivated to succeed in life. On the other hand, if you hang around with successful people, you too will find success.
